How Long Does It Take for MBBR Media to “Work”?

Het laatste nieuws van het bedrijf over How Long Does It Take for MBBR Media to “Work”?

One of the most common questions we hear is:

“How long does it take for MBBR media to start working?”

The short answer is:

It depends.

MBBR media itself does not treat wastewater. The real work is done by microorganisms growing on the media surface.

So the better question is:

How long does it take to establish a healthy and active biofilm?

What affects the start-up time?

New media needs time for microorganisms to attach, grow and form a stable biofilm.

The process depends on many factors:

✔ Temperature
✔ Dissolved oxygen
✔ pH and alkalinity
✔ Organic and ammonia loading
✔ Existing biomass
✔ Media filling ratio
✔ Mixing and aeration

If active sludge or mature biofilm is already present, microorganisms can usually colonize new carriers faster.

Don't judge performance by appearance alone

After a few days, you may not see much biofilm on the carriers. That doesn't necessarily mean the system isn't working.

For biological treatment, parameters such as COD/BOD, NH₄-N, NO₂-N, DO, pH and alkalinity are much more meaningful indicators than simply looking at the media.

So, how long does it take?

There is no universal answer.

Initial biofilm formation may begin within days, while stable biological performance may take several weeks or longer, depending on the application and operating conditions.

The media provides the surface.

The microorganisms do the work—and the operating conditions determine how quickly they become effective.
